Webhosting Types

When You Need More:

Server Co-location

The “Top-End” of web hosting, entailing the purchase of space within an ISP’s data centre. For those with the need to have total control of more than one server

In Co-Location Hosting The ISP provides:

    • Direct, High-speed Internet connection.
    • Limitless number of IP addresses.

Obviously the most costly of hosting types, due to the high expenditures needed in maintenance of data centres as well as providing CDR connections to the Internet.

Buyer will have to provide all technical equipment, configuration, setup and maintenance within the co-location centre.

Managed Hosting

For larger e-commerce businesses who need help in managing their online presence due to a heavy, constant level of traffic.

Managed hosts monitor and maintain all of the infrastructure factors necessary in hosting a site on the Internet which usually includes configuration, installation, and maintenance of:

    • servers
    • firewalls
    • operating system
    • backend database
    • server support
    • other devices required

In general, a competent managed host should keep an eye on the following:

    • Memory usage
    • Storage usage
    • CPU usage/utilization
    • Load average
    • Virtual memory usage
    • Server accessibility (ping)

A managed host is responsible for maintaining the infrastructure, monitored on a 24 hour basis:

For example, if a hard drive breaks down, the host replaces it; if a server fails, the host switches it; if there's a spike in traffic, bandwidth is adjusted accordingly by the host manager.
