There are many different types of webhosting available. What are they, and which is right for you?

Free Webhosting

    • Usually comes with ISP (Internet Service Provider) package.
    • Address is based on ISP’s internet address.
    • A good way for novices to quickly and cheaply (its free!) set up a web page online.
    • Lack of database support or scripting languages.
    • Ability to store some images on text, but very minimal data tr ansfer allowance.
    • Many hosting companies now also offer free domain name hosting.
    • Free Web Host providers such as Geocites offer free hosting but place advertisements on all hosted web pages.

Premium Webhosting

Offers a premium service which is reflected in its price, which depends on the features included in the chosen package, and data transferred through your site and the internet.

Packages at this level usually provide:

    • Dedicated server address
    • 100Mb of storage
    • Scripting languages
    • Database server, Database support
    • 1 Gb of data transfer / month.

Image Hosting

    • Service providing a regular upload and display interface purely for images, but often with limited customer support.
    • Typically used by those wanting to share digital images such as photos.
    • Users can avail of this service with ease and speed, uploading the images to their personal account and then viewing the images within a template online.

Domain Hosting

    • A service usually offered by Domain Name registration companies when you purchase and register a domain name.
    • Offers users the ability to host their own website without having to run their own DNS (Domain Name Server).
    • User’s domain name or IP address (Internet Protocol) is stored on another user’s DNS, with the name pointing to your server.
